I have a problem with reacting to this development by saying No Development. Maybe you don't like the word but everything is development and there is no such thing as 'No Development'. Something is going to happen to this land and its only the limitation of our minds that will prevent something 'appropriate' going ahead. I have taught Permaculture and even brought students to this property to demonstrate Keyline. It is not a perfect example anymore. The previous owner probably did not keep the system maintained to a high standard. The potential is great though. What can occur here is a demonstration of a best practice development where housing is incorporated into environmental Best Practice with the full agricultural potential realised. A place that gives inhabitants a quality life in the broad context of a more sustainable Hawkesbury community. Economic, Social and Environmental. We know what Best Practice is. We cant let the developer divide the community and dump a second rate development on us. Council is powerless if this goes to Land and Environment Court. Its bad press that will get the developer to reconsider the development and do a better job.
I agree completely Eric. A blanket ban on developing the site is unrealistic and probably undesirable.
I believe the main focus should be to build pressure to encourage the developer to look at other development models which will provide a better outcome for the community while still earning them a profit on their investment.
If you back your enemy into a corner they will fight to the death to escape. They need to be given an option that will be beneficial to all parties.
It would be great if some alternative plans could be presented. Does NRDCAA have the funds to do something like this. John Champagne would be an excellent person to get invvolved with this given his experience with the BEND project in Bega. http://www.thebegavalley.org.au/bend.html
The seniors development was approved and the first stage of construction has commenced.
What remains is the proposal for the remainder of the site. The number of housing lots has not yet been stated but a rezoning application is anticipated in the coming months.
Meanwhile the NRDCAA is working on seeking views on solutions to alleviate the burden on infrastructure currently being faced by the community.
At a meeting on February 20 (7.15pm) at the Nth Richmond community centre the member for Londonderry Bart Bassett will be present to answer questions on this issue.
